Kundli Matching
A plain-language guide to Vedic horoscope matching for marriage.
What Kundli matching means
Kundli matching — also called Kundali Milan, Janam Kundli matching, or horoscope matching for marriage — compares the birth charts of two people to judge how compatible they are likely to be as life partners. Rooted in Vedic astrology, it looks beyond a single number to weigh temperament, values, health and long-term harmony.
What it looks at
Matching is based mainly on the Moon sign (Rashi) and birth star (Nakshatra) of each person. These are scored across a set of compatibility factors — called kootas in the North Indian tradition and poruthams in the South — and checked for specific afflictions known as doshas, such as Mangal Dosha and Nadi Dosha.
The two main systems
North India uses Ashtakoot Guna Milan, a 36-point scale across eight kootas. South India uses porutham matching, based on ten poruthams. The intent is the same; the factors and scoring differ. Suited supports both, so a family can check a match in the tradition it follows.
Why accurate birth details matter
Your date, exact time and place of birth are needed to calculate the Moon sign and Nakshatra correctly. Even a small error in the birth time can shift the Nakshatra and change the result, so it is worth getting these details right before matching.
