Porutham
South Indian (Tamil) marriage matching, explained.
What porutham matching is
In South India, marriage compatibility is checked using porutham matching — also called 10 porutham, or Thirumana porutham in Tamil. It compares the birth stars (Nakshatra) of the couple across ten factors called poruthams.
The ten poruthams
- Dina — day-to-day health and energy
- Gana — how alike their basic nature is
- Mahendra — children, and doing well with money
- Stree Deergha — the wife's health and happiness after marriage
- Yoni — closeness and comfort with each other
- Rashi, also written Rasi — feelings and home life
- Rashyadhipathi, also written Rasyadhipathi — how well their minds and their views match
- Vashya, also written Vasya — how naturally attracted they are to each other, and how easily they win each other's heart
- Rajju — how long and how safely the marriage lasts
- Vedha — small problems that come back again and again
Which poruthams matter most
All ten are weighed, but Rajju and Vedha are given particular importance in many traditions, with Dina, Gana, Mahendra, Stree Deergha and Yoni also treated as key. Practice varies by family and region.
Porutham compared with Guna Milan
Porutham is the South Indian tradition; Ashtakoot Guna Milan is the North Indian one. They overlap in intent but differ in the factors examined and how they are scored, so a match can read a little differently between the two.
Both systems with Suited
Suited supports North Indian Guna Milan and South Indian porutham, and explains each factor in plain language — so a family can check a match in the system it trusts.
